This folding map is printed on thin, banknote-style paper and is based on Fielding Lucas' atlas map from 1823. It served as the frontispiece to A Northern Tour..., a scarce early guidebook of the northeastern United States by Henry Gilpin and published by Carey & Lea. The map is colored by county and is current to 1824, with the newly formed Orleans County appearing along Lake Ontario's southern shores. The Erie Canal, which was completed in the same year as this publication, is shown on the map as the "Grand Canal" along with a profile at bottom. A smaller profile of the Champlain Canal is shown at right. The Adirondacks are not named, but instead labeled "Wild Unsettled Country." Buffalo is very small and named Buffaloe, and Salina is located in Onondago County, which was renamed Syracuse shortly after this map was issued. 12mo., 279 pages with 18 pages of publisher advertisements. Hardbound in quarter black leather over marbled boards.
