This interesting and unusual pictorial map was both drawn and copyrighted by William Johnson Goodacre in Santa Barbara. Historical events, important sites, and copious notations fill the map from Fort Ross to San Diego including "Drake named California 'New Albion'," "Jas. Marshall discovered gold in mill vace Jan. 24 1848," and "John Bidwell's party of 60 made up first wagon train to enter state south of Lake Take 1841." Along the coast are additional illustrations, notations, and flags representing the claims of various nations over a 350-year period including the Red Cross of St. George, the Argentine flag (which flew for 16 days), the Bear flag of the California Republic, the Spanish Royal Standard, and several others. On the upper right side of the sheet are depictions of the 6 capitals under the American flag including Monterey, San Jose, Vallejo, Benicia, and Sacramento. The map is further illustrated by the state of California seal, bird, tree and flower. Printed to have the appearance of parchment paper.
