This map presents county development current to about 1870, prior to Ventura County (1872) being formed from Santa Barbara County. To the east, a huge San Bernardino county extends nearly across the state with no sign of Orange County (created in 1889). The railroad network continues to evolve, extending north to Shasta and south to Buena Vista. Several wagon roads appear in the south around Los Angeles including one to the Great Salt Lake. An early "Los Vegas" is located near an Old Mormon Fort in Nevada, where most of the development is evident in the west near Carson City and Virginia City. A small fragment of the U.S. Mail Route is shown along the Mexican border.
