This small Civil War-era map of the Eastern Untied States presents the railroad network extending west to include Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and New Orleans. The Erie Railway is depicted in bold line extending from New York to Dunkirk, Erie and Buffalo and linking to other lines going west. The line boasts “Great Direct Broad Gauge Route for Syracuse, Rochester, Canandaigua, Avon, Niagara Falls, Buffalo..." Dated only about 8 months after formation of the company on June 25, 1861, following bankruptcy reorganization of the New York and Erie Railroad. This timetable appears to be one of the earliest issued for the new line. In fact, the map still shows the line as the old “N. York & Erie RR." It would gain fame later in the decade in an event known as the “Erie War” as four well-known financiers struggled for control over the railroad. The verso features a timetable, fare information, and related text. Drawn by Chromer. Self-folding.
