This is the second edition of Hitchcock large and important geological map of the United States. A table at lower left provides an explanatory key to the colors used to indicate the nine distinct geological types. In addition to the geology, the colorful map depicts railroads, roads, canals, army arsenals and forts. The carefully drawn map presents a wonderful comingling of both geographical and geological detail. Lithographed by Julius Bien. The map is accompanied by Rossiter Raymond's 550-page report, which includes two small folding maps of Sierra County, California and several other illustrations. Hardbound in brown cloth with gilt title on spine.
