This useful map is housed in the rear pocket of the Bureau of Ethnology's Seventh Annual Report. Compiled under the direction of Henry Gannett, it is vibrantly colored to better illustrate the possible early linguistic relationships of the various Native American tribes. This is the first edition of this map and the basis for a similar map that appeared later in the 11th Census of the United States. The report also includes a small folding Ojibwa Indian Reservations in Minnesota and Wisconsin (12.0 x 7.7") and several color plates. Accompanying papers include Powell's "Indian Linguistic Families of America North of Mexico," W.J. Hoffman's "The Midewiwin or 'Grand Medicine Society' of the Ojibwa," and James Mooney's "The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees." This example is complete but for the missing Plate XI "Sacred Objects." 409 pages. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt decoration on front cover and gilt title on spine.

Condition: B+
The "Linguistic Stocks" map is bright and crisp with light dampstaining along the left vertical fold. The Ojibwa map is in fine condition, and the color plates are clean and bright with some minor dampstaining that is mostly confined to the blank margins. Text is pleasantly toned. The binding has been rebacked while retaining the original spine covering. Corners are bumped and there is light shelf wear.
