This is the first volume in this incredible series on the history of cartography. The first volume largely concentrates on three wall maps of the Seventeen Provinces, by Gerard de Jode (1566), Willem Blaeu (1608), and Claes Janszoon Visscher (1636). There are also sections on the Van Deutecum family of engravers and a more comprehensive overview of 16th- and 17th-century printed wall maps of the Seventeen Provinces produced in the Netherlands. Text volume in both Dutch and English, 171 pp., profusely illustrated, together with the portfolio containing full-size facsimile reproductions on 50 sheets. The maps reproduced in the portfolio include the aforementioned de Jode (5 sheets), Blaeu (22 sheets), and Visscher (14 sheets); Blaeu's folio map of the Seventeen Provinces (2 sheets); Joannes van Deutecum's 1594 map (3 sheets); and the Francois van de Hoeye 1616 map (4 sheets). Map facsimiles are like new, crisp and fine. The portfolio covers have minor soiling. Contents of text volume are clean and tight, with light dampstaining along spine, not impacting the interior.
