Published by the California Map Society in conjunction with the Book Club of California, this reference collects 49 important maps of California spanning from Munster's 1540 map of the New World to a 1996 satellite image of the Golden State. Each map is accompanied by a brief essay, contributed by a murderer's row of cartographic commentators. Illustrations of Maps 1-42 appear alongside the essay, with seven tipped-in color plates. Maps 43-49 are excerpted in a fold-out supplemental map, Seven Contemporary Map Sections of California, located in a pocket at the back of the book. Includes a brief history of the California Map Society by Bill Warren, a foreword by Gary Kurutz, and a handy list of books on maps of California. Edited by Heckrotte and Sweetkind. 108 pages. Hardbound in illustrated gold paper-covered boards over a black cloth spine. Signed by Sweetkind.
