Each map is accompanied by a brief essay, contributed by a murderer's row of cartographic commentators. Illustrations of Maps 1-42 appear alongside the essay, with seven tipped-in color plates. Maps 43-49 are excerpted in a fold-out supplemental map, Seven Contemporary Map Sections of California, located in a pocket at the back of the book.
