This Dutch Staten Bible is complete in three parts - Old Testament, New Testament and the Apocrypha. It is illustrated with six folding, copper-engraved maps and six double-page engravings with biblical illustrations, all by Daniel Stoopendaal. The Staten Bible, so named because it is the Dutch language translation that was ordered by the Staten Generael, became the standard Bible of the Dutch Reformed Church, corresponding to the King James Bible of England, and Luther's translation in Germany. The maps include:

A. Werelt Caert is a double hemisphere world map based on Visscher's similar map of 1663 but updated to show California as an island. The map is beautifully engraved with allegorical representations of the continents in the corners of the sheet.
B. De Gelegentheyt van 't Paradys en 't Landt Canaan, Mitsgaders d'Eerst Bewoonde Landen der Patriarchen covers the region between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, with depictions of numerous biblical sites, including the wanderings of the Children of Israel and the Garden of Eden. Condition: There are two tiny fold separations and a 3" fold separation at bottom right that have been closed on verso with archival tape.
C. Perigrinatie ofte Veertich-Iarige Reyse der Kinderen Israels depicts the Exodus from Egypt and the wanderings of the Children of Israel. A large illustration of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments fills the foreground. Condition: A couple of short fold separations in the blank margins.
D. Ierusalem is a bird's-eye plan of ancient Jerusalem with engravings of temple vessels, religious icons, Solomon and a high priest, and a large elevation of the Temple of Solomon.
E. Het Beloofde Landt Canaan covers the Holy Land with scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. Condition: There are two dampstains in the image at top.
F. De Beschryvingh van de Reysen Pauli, en van de Andere Apostelen illustrates the travels of Apostle Paul.

Small folio. Original quarter leather over brown marbled-paper covered boards with raised bands on spine.

References: Poortman & Augusteijn # 136, #138, #140, #142; #144; #146 (all KII-1); cf. Shirley #498.

Condition: B+

There are light dampstains along the edges of the text block, entering just a bit into the image of several of the maps. Overall the maps are very good, with minor occasional soiling, and a few other imperfections for specific maps are noted in the description above. The text has minor occasional soiling, and Folio 240 has a long tear. The title page is lightly soiled and partially detached from the text block along with the first two pages of text. The front cover has been reattached using binder's tape, although is still very fragile. The covers are heavily worn with bumped corners, chips and abrasions. The spine is also heavily worn with abrasions and cracks.
