Engraved by Jodocus Hondius, this is one of the most decorative maps of Lincolnshire. The map is finely detailed and incorporates a town plan of Lincoln, a strapwork title cartouche with a royal crest and a compass rose, a scale cartouche with compass and putti, a sea monster and sailing ship, and ten armorials of the Earls of Lincoln. Battle scenes are depicted above a block of text describing the two major conflicts that were fought in the region in the years 1140 and 1217. This is a rare, early edition prior to the bottom left corner of the plate breaking off, which occurred during the printing process and appears in most later editions. A short crack is visible in the border at top right. English text on verso.
