This simple yet powerful map of New York City was issued in Walter Vrooman's Government Ownership in Production and Distribution. Being an Account of 337 Now Existing National and Municipal Undertakings in the 100 Principal Countries of the World. Vrooman, a socialist educator, noted that the "purpose of this book is to combat the principle of paternal government and to prove that the tendency of society in both civilized and uncivilized countries is toward fraternal government." The map uses bold red coloring to demonstrate this point, with nearly half of Manhattan being owned and operated by various government entities including the streets, parks, docks, rivers (!), and more. Vrooman's intent was to expand the reader's definition of socialism and visually demonstrates his viewpoint in perhaps the most capitalistic, individualistic city in the world. Vrooman continued that this concept was true across the globe where "one business after another, one activity after another has been taken by different countries and municipalities throughout the world from the realm of private enterprise."
