This Clason map of the state was published for the Standard Mutual Hail Insurance Association with bright coloring showing “Where Hail Storms Occurred in 1920” (orange) and “…in 1921" (green). By identifying the regions of the state that were subjected to hail storms in the past two years, the map visually communicates a level of risk for each geographic area. While early efforts to provide multi-peril crop insurance largely failed because of widespread destruction from weather events such as floods and drought, hail insurance was viable because of the localized nature and limited economic impact. Eventually in 1938 the federal government began to provide subsidies for crop insurance. Folds into stiff printed wrappers with advertising for the association on the front and rear covers. We found no past sales records or institutional examples on OCLC.
