This chronicle of the St. Jean-Baptiste expedition was translated and edited by John Dunmore and published by the Hakluyt Society, an organization founded in 1846 to publish primary narratives of various expeditions. Drawn from the previously unpublished journals of Jean de Surville and Guillaume Labe, the book provides crucial context for an expedition that was overshadowed by the contemporary voyages of Bougainville, Wallis, and Cook. The St. Jean-Baptiste rediscovered the Solomon Islands and made several interesting observations along the route from eastern Malaysia to New Zealand. Illustrated with 10 black & white plates and 4 maps. 310 pages. Hardbound in blue cloth with gilt decoration on cover and gilt title on spine, with a dust jacket protected by Mylar.
