This 16-page issue features the front-page article “French Emigrants,” which criticized the grant of land in Alabama (authorized by Congress) to French Bonapartist exiles. The article notes that some of the emigrants moved on to Texas, and prints a letter describing the new colony. The editor is skeptical of the “real object” of the colonists and warns that “a little watching of their movement may save us much trouble hereafter.” At the time, Texas was claimed by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The presence of the colony pressured Spain to adopt the Adams-Onis Treaty in 1819.
