This handsome hand-colored lithograph shows a male and female pomarine jaeger (or pomarine skua). These seabirds are similar to gulls but larger, with barrel chests and thick beaks. They nest on Arctic tundra and spend the rest of the year at sea. The drawing and lithography are credited to John and Elizabeth Gould. John Gould (1804-81) created some of the most beautiful bird prints ever produced and was known throughout the world as "The Bird Man." This lithograph was published in his 5-volume The Birds of Europe (1832-37). Printed by C. Hullmandel.
