This graphic naval scene depicts the Siege of Barcelona between pro-Bourbon Spain and pro-Habsburg Spain in the War of Spanish Succession. This scene shows the pro-Habsburg Grand Alliance, led by Lord Peterborough, defeat the Bourbon forces with ships shown both sinking and on fire. In the background, some of Peterborough's forces have reached land and begun invading the city. The Grand Alliance would hold the city (and Catalonia) until the Bourbons regained control in 1714. Based upon an engraving by William Rayner in 1738.
