This is a later edition of this impressive French historical atlas which served as a forerunner to the familiar Carey & Lea/Buchon atlases. There are 35 double-page plates and a supplement incorporating chronological, historical and genealogical tables with 25 maps, including a double-hemisphere world map, a western hemisphere map, and a map of the United States. Of particular interest is the map of the United States, which shows a conjectural border with Canada, favoring U.S. claims. The states (colored yellow) are named and numbered in order of their admission to the union; a misshapen Missouri being last at 24. The territories are colored pink and include Florida, Michigan, Arkansas, Missouri, and Northwest Territory. Native American tribes are located with a notation estimating their population at 425,700. A massive mountain range dominates the west and a speculative River of the West (R. del Carmelo ou St. Philippe) flows across the Great Basin, which is labeled as parts unknown.

The publication date is based on the map of the Western Hemisphere, which is dated 1827. While there is no table of contents, the atlas appears to be complete. Elephant folio. Hardbound, red quarter-calf with brown paper-covered boards with a printed title label on front cover.

Condition: B+

Condition grade is for the maps. Plates are generally in very good condition with full contemporary color, some light toning, and occasional soiling, offsetting, and damp staining. The front cover has separated from the text block and the title page is detached. Covers and edges are bumped and worn, and the back cover has a large portion of the paper missing and a 3" tear in the board at bottom.
