This lot contains two volumes of the Niles Weekly Register, covering the period from September 1826 to September 1827. Both feature entries related to the short-lived “New Republic of Texas, alias Fredonia” including:

Volume 31, Sept. 2, 1826 - “considerable immigration to Austin’s settlement in Texas. The settlers feel strong enough to protect themselves against the Indians…” (p. 3)

Volume 31, Nov. 4, 1826 - “…the states of Cohuahilla and Texas had nearly completed their constitutions” which included the abolition of slavery with “considerable opposition” from slaveholders. “The Americans…have become dissatisfied with the government…” (p. 157)

Volume 31, Feb. 10, 1826 - “…the neighboring Mexican province of Texas, seems to be declared independent…chiefly supported by seduction of Indian trides [sic].” (p. 369)

Volume 32, March 17, 1827 - “The new republic of Texas, alias Fredonia, has been dissolved…The objections of the Fredonians to the Mexican government was that it would not admit of slavery.” (p. 37)

Volume 32, April 14, 1827 - ‘The Fredonians' provide details on the perpetrators and the editor’s delight that the defeat of the conspirators “will prevent the establishment of a very troublesome neighbor on our most exposed and weakest frontier.” (p. 114)

Volume 31 covers the period from September 1826 - March 1827 with an erratically numbered supplement and 25 of 26 complete issues (lacking issue no. 15). Volume 32 covers the period from March - September 1827 with 26 complete issues. Both are hardbound in quarter leather with tips over marbled boards.

Volume 1 - Contents have light toning and foxing. Spine is cracked down the center and the two halves of the volume are held together only by the stitching. Covers are moderately worn. Ex-libris. Volume 2 - Light toning throughout and minimal foxing. Front board is detached. Covers and spine are worn. Ex-library.
