"[Lot of 2] Prospectus Forensis Curiae Francofurti ad Maenum in Germania / La Place du Marche de Francfort sur le Mein en Allemagne [and] Vue Perspective du Pont, et de la Ville Francfort",

Optical prints (or vue d’optique) were made to be viewed in a special apparatus that provided the viewer with an illusion of depth (early 3-D). The large mirror employed in the viewing machine showed the image reversed so many of these views have the titles and information engraved forward and backwards to facilitate viewing in the machine or by hand. These prints were only produced for a short period of time (1740 to 1790) and then were replaced with the invention of the smaller steroviewer. These views are some of the most distinctive and interesting images of the eighteenth century, and their distinctive engraving style, striking perspective and bright original color makes them as visually delightful as they are historically fascinating.

A. Prospectus Forensis Curiae Francofurti ad Maenum in Germania / La Place du Marche de Francfort sur le Mein en Allemagne (16.3 x 9.9"). This lovely view depicts a bustling market scene in Old Town, Frankfurt. The Romer, the medieval town hall with an iconic steeped gable facade, overlooks the scene. Published by Daumont, a well-known publisher of optical prints, established in Paris at rue St. Martin. Condition: On a lightly toned sheet with moderate soiling and a few small dampstains. Remnants of hinge tape on verso. (B)

B. Vue Perspective du Pont, et de la Ville Francfort (15.5 x 8.3"). This lovely view shows a bridge spanning the Main and the surrounding architecture. An alternate title appears in reverse above the upper neatline: Le Pont et la Ville de Francfore. There is no identifying publisher imprint on this edition; it was possibly published by the Paris-based Jacques Francois Chereau. Condition: Contemporary color on a watermarked sheet with light soiling. There are short edge tears and light toning confined to the blank margins. Remnants of hinge tape on verso. (B+)
