"Map of Maj. Gen. Ross's Route, with the British Column, from Benedict, on the Patuxent River, to the City of Washington, August 1814",

This important map was issued in William James' A Full and Correct Account of the Military Occurrences of the Late War. It show the progress of British General Ross' march on Washington during the War of 1812. Ross arrived by ship at Benedict, Maryland and marched his 4,500 troops through Upper Marlboro before battling with American forces at the Battle of Bladensburg on August 24, 1814. An inset provides additional detail of this short-lived battle and subsequent British victory. Ross then marched to Washington and burned down the Capital, White House, and Navy Yard. A few weeks later, Ross turned his attention to Baltimore, but was killed in route by American forces. A legend at bottom right shows advances and retreats from both forces. Engraved by Mutlow.

Issued folding on watermarked paper with a number of fold separations that have been closed on verso with archival tape. A binder's trim at right has been replaced with old paper and a related 1.5" binding tear has been repaired with a combination of archival tape on verso and unknown material on recto.
