This early and scarce pocket map of the state is current to 1824, reflecting the organization of Orleans County along Lake Ontario. Early wagon roads are depicted throughout and the "Grand Canal" (Erie Canal) is shown extending from Albany to Lake Erie (it would open in 1825). Flanking the map are profile views of the Grand Canal and Champlain Canal. Folds into full leather covers (3.5 x 5.3") with gilt title on the front cover.

Interestingly, the front endpaper has a Carey & Lea list of maps with a note: “Have lately published the following MAPS, which are sold either in sheets, or neatly put up in for the pocket.” Although the ad indicates all the Carey & Lea maps were available in pocket map format, Carey & Lea pocket maps are rare. In fact, this is the first example of any Carey & Lea pocket map that we have encountered in our auctions.
