A detailed map of southern Manhattan showing the street grid pattern and “all the Ferries and Steamship Docks, Elevated, Subways Electric and Cross Town Car Lines.” The map was issued with compliments of the Broadway Central Hotel, which is prominently located on the map. It was issued shortly after the city's subway was opened in 1904, and the sole line is shown in black overprinting stretching from the Battery to above Central Park. Text on verso promotes the hotel and provides a guided tour which includes tenements as a tourist attraction: “in the tenement district…Jews, Russians, Poles and many other aliens swarm in almost incredible crowds. This trip gives an excellent idea of the homes of the city’s humbler toilers.” The hotel, the largest in the city at one time, is famous as the location of the formation of the Major League’s National League in 1876, the murder of financier James Fisk in 1872, and the residence of Arnold Rothstein, the “fixer” of the 1919 World Series and inspiration for a character in The Great Gatsby.
