This striking illustration by Howard Burke contains three maps and was issued in the March 13, 1938 issue of the Los Angeles Examiner. At top is a map of Oahu Island locating Schofield Barracks, Barber's Point, Diamond Head, Honolulu, and Pearl Harbor, which was described as "the Center of the United States' Greatest Concentration of Military Strength." At bottom is a close up of Pearl Harbor and a globe showing Hawaii's strategic position between Japan and the United States. Text reinforces the importance of Hawaii: "Our first line of protection against invasion begins in mid-ocean, where we have spent 700 millions for our greatest army post and naval base - AND MUST SPEND MORE!"

References: cf. Rumsey #3603.
