A. The Mapmaker's Art - Essays on the History of Maps, by Edward Lynam, published 1953, black & white (7.6 x 10.1"). This informative reference on the history of British maps and mapmakers covers topics including period ornament, writing, and symbols on maps, Saxton's monumental atlas of England and Wales, and early mapping of the Bahamas. 140 pages of text with 52 illustrations. Hardbound in blue cloth covers with gilt title on spine. Condition: Contents are clean and tight. Corners have been bumped and partially exposed, and there is minor soiling on the covers. (B+)

B. The Map as Art - Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography, by Katharine Harmon, published 2009, printed color (10.3 x 9.3"). This fascinating, beautifully designed book explores the intersection of cartography and contemporary art, focusing on the "exponential increase in artists working with maps" since the 1960s. It includes works by some of the biggest names in art, including Ai Weiwei, Olafur Eliasson, Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, and Julian Schabel, as well as lesser-known artists on the cutting edge of the contemporary scene. The art is accompanied by enriching essays by art historian Gayle Clemans. Published by Princeton Architectural Press. 255 pages. Hardbound with illustrated covers. Condition: A few minor scuffs to the covers, otherwise fine. (A)

C. The Art of the Map - An Illustrated History of Map Elements and Embellishments, by Dennis Reinhartz, published 2012, printed color (9.5 x 10.3"). This reference by Dennis Reinhartz is the first book-length study to specifically focus on the decorative elements in maps. Reinhartz is professor emeritus of the University of Texas at Arlington, former president of the Society for the History of Discoveries and the Texas Map Society, and author of The Cartographer and the Literati: Herman Moll and His Intellectual Circle, among other achievements. As one might expect given its subject matter, the book is very handsomely produced and filled with illustrations. 219 pages. Hardbound with gilt title on spine and an illustrated dust jacket. Condition: Like new. (A+)
