"Paris, Capitale de France", Wit, Frederick de

This lovely and uncommon view of Paris shows the city in the background with merchants in the foreground. This style of low horizon panoramic view was invented by Pieter Hendricksz. Schut, who based them on Matthaus Merian's city views. Schut's work was copied by Allard, Schenk, and de Wit, the latter of whose plates were re-issued by Covens & Mortier and Pieter van der AA. The views showed the town in the distance on the horizon, with people, animals or trees in the foreground, all surrounded by a frame-style border. De Wit's editions can be identified by the ribbon draping along the top of the frame.
