This graphic map of the moon was created by Jaques Devos and published by Spirou magazine at the height of the "Space Race" between the United States and the Soviet Union. The two hemispheres of the moon - the "visible face" at left and the "dark side of the moon" at right - are surrounded by images that present the history of space exploration. At top center are the American astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders, who were the first humans to fly around the moon in December 1968 aboard Apollo 8. The Soviet's celebrated astronaut Yuri Gagarin, who was the first human to journey into outer space in 1961 is shown at bottom. Gagarin's Vostok I is at top right, with other Soviet spacecraft including Lunik III, Soyuz, and Luna 9. The American spacecraft depicted are the Saturn 5, Surveyor, Ranger 7, and the Lunar Excursion Model, which had made its maiden launch in January 1968 and a later model of which would enable Neil Armstrong to be the first man to walk on the moon. Le Journal de Spirou is a weekly French/Belgian comic magazine that was first issued in 1938 and continues publication today.
