This multi-lingual sheet focuses on Gibraltar, an important port at the entrance to the Mediterranean. In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet captured the town on behalf of Archduke Charles of Austria. The 1713 Treaty of Utrecht ceded control of Gibraltar to Britain in exchange for Britain's withdrawal from the war. The view at top shows expanded defenses in 1727 when the Spanish attacked and instituted a lengthy siege. The Spanish suffered a huge defeat, losing 5000 men while the British lost only 300. The two central views show Gibraltar from the north west and from the Bay. At bottom left is a depiction of the battle in 1727, with a lettered key identifying important locations. At bottom right is a map of the western Mediterranean showing the route from Port Mahon in Minorca to Gibraltar.
