"[Map in Book] A Geological Map of the Connecticut [in] The American Journal of Science, and Arts ... Vol. VI...", Hitchcock, Edward

This rare, early map depicts the geology along the Connecticut River from Westminster, Vermont to New Haven, Connecticut. A legend at top provides color coding for 15 different geological types including granite, limestone and coal formations. Along the right side of the sheet is a full-length "Profile crossing the strata at right angles from Shelburne to the mouth of Miller's River." This is the first geological map of Connecticut according to the listing in Marcou.

The map is still bound into Volume VI of The American Journal of Science (5.2 x 8.8"). 408 pp. with articles covering geology, mineralogy, botany and conchology. Includes 13 plates of shells, rocks and fossils. Octavo, hardbound in brown buckram with gilt title on spine.

The folding map has light offsetting, minor staining, and a couple of small fold separations closed on verso with archival tape. Text has scattered foxing and toning. Ex-library with a withdrawn stamp on front pastedown. Modern binding has only minor wear.
