This scarce work is volume 32 of the proceedings of the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, a French society devoted to the humanities. Founded in 1663, the society focuses on the knowledge of history and antiquity and has performed roles including composing Latin inscriptions for public monuments, selecting art to decorate the Palace of Versailles, and publishing works related to the civilizations of antiquity. This volume includes the articles published by the Académie between 1761 and 1763, including reviews of geographical works by d'Anville. Five maps based on d'Anville's work are contained within the volume, four of which are folding:

The volume also includes 5 plates showing ancient coins and Egyptian script. Quarto. Title page; table of contents; list of corrections to previous volumes; 808 pp.; 5 maps; 5 plates. Hardbound in full contemporary brown speckled calf; raised bands, compartments with gilt tooling, and red and black morocco title labels on spine; all page edges red; marbled endpapers.

Condition: A

The maps and plates are clean and bright with a hint of offsetting on the folding plates. The text has minor occasional toning or foxing. A previous owner's bookplate is on the inside front pastedown. The covers have some abrasions and bumped corners. The spine has some tiny abrasions and cracks.
