This is the third state of this scarce map of the Americas, and the first state to show the Mer de l'Ouest. It was published in Lyon by Daudet. In North America, an oversize Louisiana dominates the continent, minimizing the English possessions. Lightly engraved in the northwestern part of the continent are a large Sea of the West and the apocryphal Northwest Passage supposedly discovered by the Spanish admiral Bartholome de Fonte. In South America, the River Paraguay rivals the Amazon in size and importance. On either side of the map are text descriptions of the various provinces and territories of the Americas. A table at the bottom of the map lists the possessions of the European colonial powers and the religions practiced in the New World: Catholicism, Protestantism, Sun Worship, and the Cult of the Devil.
