This map was drawn by Victor Gilliam and featured on the front cover of the August 10, 1895 issue of Judge magazine. While the map's title is Map of United States, it depicts all of North America as under U.S. control. Here Uncle Sam is depicted with a hat (Canada), head (U.S.), nose (Florida) and mouth (Gulf of Mexico) about to swallow a fish (Cuba) as he says --“I’ve had my eye on that morsel for some time; guess I’ll have to take it in.” In 1895 insurgents attempted to overthrow the Cuban colonial government with some U.S. support. This was one of a number of Judge covers intended to mold public opinion in favor of an expansionist U.S. policy that culminated three years later with the Spanish-American War.
