This incredibly detailed and visually pleasing map was issued as a supplement to Fortune Magazine in July 1939. It is color-coded to show the various types of development in the region including residential, industrial, businesses, parks, federal government property, and more. The map presents the dense street-grid pattern of the city along with incredible detail of the numerous docks and slips along the shorelines. Features an inset of Lower Manhattan at left with a color-coded legend identifying businesses, stores, apartment houses, hotels, and theaters. One of the most interesting graphic elements on the map is an inset at bottom right showing population density between day and night. The visual clearly demonstrates a large population flow into Manhattan during the day, and an exodus to the suburbs in the evening. The map was undertaken by Richard Edes Harrison, a frequent contributor to Fortune Magazine, based in large part on earlier maps produced by the City Planning Commission as part of their Emergency Relief Project.
