"The Sportsman's Map of Florida",

This charming map was created by John Held Jr. for the sportsman, and shows the numerous "sporting" activities one can enjoy in and around Florida. Golf, motor racing, duck shooting, fishing, boating, boxing, dog races, tennis, flying, horseshoes and checkers are shown pictorially on the map. Several other benefits to visiting the state are noted, including the import of rum, wine, liquors, ales and cigars. The map also warns of places to avoid. The Cypress Swamp and surrounding region is shown containing alligators, Seminole Indians, and "the last democrat hiding in the Everglades." And the northwest region of the state features a note: "What's over here I don't know and don't care even if I get nasty letters from Chambers of Commerce." On verso is a photo of the new Ford "Columbus" airplane in flight. Published in the March 1929 issue of The Sportsman.

John Held Jr. (1889-1958) was an American cartoonist who is best known for his 1920's portrayals of dancing (including the Charleston), driving, playing sports, and other popular activities of the era.
