This scarce Scottish atlas was created as a "cheap, convenient, and, as far as possible, a correct atlas" for "the ordinary reading of the People." It includes in introduction of the physical and political features of various countries around the world, a "copious" index, and 37 maps. There are 2 maps of the world, 1 of the ancient world, 5 related to North America, 1 of South America, 20 related to Europe, 6 related to Asia, 1 of Africa, and 1 of Australia. The maps are in early printed color, with 5 of the maps (both world maps, ancient world, United States, and British Columbia) backed in linen and folding out to double the size (about 18 x 10.5") of the other maps. The map of the United States has interesting territorial configurations west of the Mississippi River. Washington and Oregon territories extend to the continental divide, adjacent to a large Nebraska territory. Utah and New Mexico territories are in their largest formations, and Kanzas territory extends west to the Rocky Mountains. Indian territory does not appear separated from Texas.

Title page; preface; contents; 154 pp.; 37 maps; 85 pp. index. Hardbound in original blue embossed cloth with gilt title and decorations on front cover and spine.

Condition: B

The maps have light to moderate toning with occasional soiling and fold separations. Several maps are detached from the volume. The map of England & Wales is completely split in half along the centerfold and also has small chips and tears along the edges of the sheet. The text is lightly toned. The covers are heavily worn, bumped and nearly detached. There are chips at the top and bottom of the spine, which is also nearly detached.
