A. A General Map of North America from the Best Authorities, by (Rev.) Jedidiah Morse, from The American Universal Geography, circa 1796 (8.7 x 7.4"). This small map of North America shows a mostly blank Great Basin and a long River of the West extending from the Entrance of Juan de Fuca eastward nearly to the Mississippi River. The map has good watershed detail, locates the source of the Mississippi River, and names some Indian tribes, forts, etc. Texas (Cenis) is located within the huge Louisiana Territory, but not delineated. Other interesting place names in the West include Quivira, Tecuayo, and New Albion. Engraved by Amos Doolittle. Published by Thomas & Andrews, Boston. Reference: McCorkle (18th C. Geography Books) #304-2. Condition: Issued folding, now flat, with minor soiling.

B. North America, by Aaron Arrowsmith, Sr., dated 1802 (7.9 x 9.8"). This interesting map of North America was adapted from Arrowsmith's large map of the continent. At the time of the map's publication, Lewis and Clark had yet to travel up the Missouri River, so there are several conjectural rivers branching off from the Upper Missouri. Additional conjectural tributaries sprout from the R. Oregan or Columbia, suggesting a possible Northwest Passage. Texas is named east of R. Bravo. Alaska has a somewhat odd shape, with much of its coast merely speculative. The expeditions of Mackenzie and Hearne are noted in the upper reaches of Canada. States and territories are identified but not delineated, and numerous Indian tribes are noted throughout. Engraved by Lowry. Published by Cadell and Davies, and Longman and Rees. Condition: On a bright sheet that has been trimmed close to the neatline at top left.
