This lot includes 40 plans from French naval captain Jean Joseph Allezard's atlas of ports and harbors around the Mediterranean. The atlas is very similar to the one by Joseph Roux that was first published in 1764, with updated editions published through 1874. According to Shirley, "It is uncertain whether the charts are actually those by Joseph Roux which had been appearing from Marseille, Livorno and Genoa from 1764 onwards or are those 'corrige et augmente' by Joseph Allezard." The plans in this lot are from multiple editions and include Constantinople, Naples, Corfu, Cyprus, Tripoli, Alexandria, Tunis, and many more. These fabulous plans detail the various towns and cities in their fortifications, chateaus, surrounding harbors and bays, and other physical features. Also included in this lot is the title page and a table of contents, ordered alphabetically by name, from the 1817 edition published in Livorne by Jean Joseph Allezard. The spectacular title page features putti, globe, trident, dolphin, compass, and canon with shot. The lot also includes a sheet showing the flags of various nations.
