This beautifully engraved pocket map was issued as a guide for travelers and immigrants. It is densely filled with information on Stage Roads, railroads, political divisions, towns and villages, watershed and canals. The areas of Iowa and northern Wisconsin are mostly unsettled. The Indian names are per Schoolcraft in this early edition. Two large tables list the routing and distances for Steam Boat Routes throughout the area. The map is embellished with a decorative floral border and an engraved vignette: "Maidens Rock, Lake Pepin on the Mississippi." Published by J.H. Colton, 86 Cedar Street, with Smith's imprint below the neatline dated 1840. The map is bound in Colton's The Western Tourist or Emigrant's Guide, which includes 119 pages of informative text and 6 pages of advertisements for the Colton firm. Hardbound in original embossed blue cloth covers with gilt title on front cover.

References: cf. Karpinski, L.C. (MI) p.260.

Condition: B+

A crisp, clean example with light offsetting and toning, with a darker area of toning where the map was glued onto the back cover. The text is bright but moderately foxed. The covers are in good condition with some black stains and an abrasion on the front cover at top left.
