Reprints of two of the most important books and maps from the Westward expansion period of the nineteenth century.

A) Texas, Oregon and California, by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, published 1948, printed color (6.2 x 9.3"). Published by Biobooks of Oakland, CA, as part of a series celebrating California's centennial, this limited edition reprint (750 copies) includes a facsimile of Mitchell’s famous map of the western United States, originally published in 1846. The book includes a foreward by Joseph A. Sullivan. Gilt-stamped red cloth, 46 pages. Folding map tipped in back. No dustjacket as issued. Ex-Libris with stamp of California State Polytechnic College Library. Condition: The map has a 5" binding tear that has been closed with cello tape on verso. Binding a bit rubbed and sunned. (B)

B) Report Upon the Pacific Wagon Roads, by Albert H. Campbell, published 1969, black & white (7.1 x 10.3"). This is Ye Galleon Press' facsimile of Campbell's original report in Senate Ex. Doc. No. 36, 35th Congress, 2nd Session. The report details the construction of pioneer wagon roads on the Great Plains immediately preceding the Civil War. It includes black & white reproductions of six maps on three sheets, folded and tucked into rear pocket. From a limited run; this example is #57 of 500 copies. 125 pages. Hardbound in orange cloth with gilt decoration and title on covers and pictorial endpapers. Condition: The maps are clean and bright. Minor shelf wear to the covers, otherwise fine. (A)
