This handsome map shows Jesuit missions in central South America. It is from Joseph Stocklein's German translation of the Lettres Edifiantes et Curieuses of the Jesuit missionaries. The map extends from Bolivia to central Brazil, encompassing most of Paraguay and part of Argentina. A large, mythical Lake Xarayes (here Schareyer See) is shown in Brazil. Two tiny, engraved lions are included on the map. This is the northern sheet of a two-sheet map, with each map standing on its own with separate title cartouches and full borders. Dutch title above the top border, Neue Taffel de Weitlauffigen Landschaft Paraguaria…
A dark impression with printer's ink residue, issued folding, now flattened. Trimmed to the neatline at sides and bottom, else very good.
