This later edition was "revised and enlarged" from the original 1851 edition. It contains 33 double-page maps, including one of the United States and 32 state maps. Most of the state maps are from east of the Mississippi River, but the book also features maps of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Texas, and a greatly updated map of California. The map of the United States shows a large Nebraska Territory (encompassing present-day Montana, Wyoming and Colorado), and Kansas, Indian, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon and Washington territories. Quarter leather over pictorial paper boards, 12mo, 384 pages. This edition has an additional 25 pages from the 1851 edition, with revised maps. Double-page maps are printed on two sheets.

Contents are a little loose with even light toning. Text-only pages 361-364 (California) have been partially torn out and should be considered perished. Covers are worn and soiled and the head of the spine is chipped.
