This "newsmap" was issued on Monday, October 15, 1945, and covers the news from October 2-9, 1945. The recto contains a large map of Japan with white arrows from the south showing the United States' planned assault on Japan, also known as Operation Downfall. The operation was canceled after Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945 following the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The verso contains a large outline map of the world showing population density, with nearly 55% of the 1940 population living in Asia. Population totals at bottom include Asia (1.2 billion), Americas (276 million), and Europe/Africa/Russia (730 million).

From 1942-46, the U.S. Army published "newsmaps" to keep American troops updated on the war. These weekly posters were distributed and posted in every American installation in the world and were intentionally more visual than descriptive to help engage and motivate personnel.
