These two maps illustrate the beginnings of the United States expansion west of the Mississippi during the 1820s with the admittance of the state of Missouri and the creation of Arkansas Territory.

A. United States, by Sidney Hall, from Walker’s Atlas, dated 1823 (9.3 x 7.3"). Nice small map with a large Arkansas Territory that extends into Spanish Territory (Texas), with the Red River serving as part of the southern border. The region to the north of Arkansas Territory and lying between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains, with the exception of Missouri, is noted as Western States and contains the names of numerous Indian tribes. Wisconsin is a large territory that includes today's Minnesota and extends to the Red River of the North. The inset at bottom right, Continuation of Florida, is on the same scale and locates Key Largo, St. Augustine, Cape Florida, Pt. Tancra, etc. Drawn and engraved by Sidney Hall and published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown from Paternoster Row, London. Condition: Original outline color with minor soiling in margins. (A)

B. United States [on sheet with] New England States, by Lincoln & Edmands, from School Atlas to Adam’s Geography, circa 1828 (12.3 x 7.8"). This scarce little school map contains two maps on a single page. The map of the United States depicts West and East Florida, a large Arkansaw Territory, and an unusually shaped state of Missouri (admitted to the Union in 1821). Both maps are well detailed and show topography, rivers, and towns. Condition: Original outline color on a toned sheet with light soiling and tape stains. There is a 2" centerfold separation at bottom with an associated tear that has been closed with hinge tape on verso, and a few small holes around the centerfold at top. (B)
