This fifth annual report features five accompanying papers in addition to the report of the director, John Wesley Powell. Of particular interest is Charles Royce's comprehensive report on the Cherokee Nation of Indians (pages 129-371) that is accompanied by two large folding maps at the rear of the volume: Map of the Former Territorial Limits of the Cherokee "Nation of" Indians Exhibiting the Boundaries of the Various Cessions of Land (31 x 28") and Map Showing the Territory Originally Assigned to the Cherokee "Nation of" Indians West of the Mississippi (30 x 20.5"). The first map shows the former territorial limits of the Cherokee Nation between the Ohio and Tennessee rivers and the Appalachian Mountains. A key lists 36 cessions from 1721 to 1835 which are numbered and colored on the map. The second map lists cessions 37-47, Treaties of May 6, 1828 and July 19, 1866. This map shows many villages, forts, and Indian agencies as well as a small section of Public Lands, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. The other accompanying papers include Burial Mounds in the Northern Untied States, The Mountain Chant: a Navajo Ceremony, the Seminole Indians of Florida, and Religious Life of the Zuni Child. The volume is further illustrated by 21 plates (7 in color) including four graphic Zuni plates. 564 pages. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt illustration on the front cover.
