This 46 page report concerns the capture of the Mexican ship Urrea by the USS Natchez in April 1837. With Texas having claimed independence the year before, there were frequent skirmishes in the Gulf of Mexico between Mexico, the newly established Texian Navy, and the United States. The USS Natchez, commanded by Captain William Mervine, was sent to the region to keep American ships safe from piracy, and ended up in a combat incident with several Mexican ships. The Natchez ended up taking over the Urrea, but Mervine was found to have exceeded his authority and ultimately released the ship and apologized to the Mexican government for his actions.
