This is an English edition of this terrific and difficult to find historical atlas focusing on Ancient Greece and containing a total of 30 (out of 31) plates that document that famous civilization. Of the plates, 16 are maps and 7 are city/battle plans. The general map of Greece is missing in this example. Additionally, there is a lovely, wood engraved view of Plato and his disciples at the Temple at the Cape Sunion, and another plate showing medallions. Of particular interest is the Plan of the Battle of Salamis depicting the battle in 480 B.C. between Greece and Persia in the Aegean Sea. Another plate, Essay on the Topography of Olympia shows the layout of the location where the first Olympic games were held. Barbie du Bocage first published his work in French in 1788 as Recueil de Cartes Geographiques Plans, Vues, et Medailles de l'Ancienne Grece, Relatifs au Voyage du Jeune Anacharis, with several editions published through the early 19th century. 8vo; 51 pages; 30 plates (missing map of Greece). Hardbound in quarter leather over marbled paper covered boards with gilt tooling and red leather title label on spine.

References: cf. Zacharakis #113-125.

Condition: B+

Ten of the maps have contemporary outline color, and the remaining plates are uncolored. Most of the plates are in near fine ("A") condition, and a few are very good ("B+"), with occasional light toning, minor foxing, and light offsetting. A couple of the plates have short centerfold separations at bottom. The front hinge is starting and the covers and spine are very heavily worn, with chips in the marbled paper and leather on the front cover, and the marbled paper completely missing on the back cover.
