This map of ancient Africa presents the whole continental outline but without any geographical information from the European discoveries of the sixteenth century. The geographical representation of the interior and place names are based on Ptolemy and other classical sources. The Nile rises from two large lakes located south of the equator. The cartouche is formed by two eagles. The map originated with Nicolas Sanson in 1650; this version was published by Pierre Mortier.

References: cf. Betz #79; cf. Norwich #35.

Condition: B+

A dark impression with contemporary outline color, light toning and offsetting, and minor foxing. There is a tiny crack near the center of the map that has been close on verso with archival tape.
