A large, handsome map of the southern part of the continent with good interior detail for the period. The routes of 18th century explorations are shown along with notations concerning their discoveries. The map includes two large inset. The first shows the Strait of Magellan in detail, with soundings, anchorages, rocks, shoals and a navigational note. The second is a south polar view extending to the equator, with a partially delineated Hollandia Nova and the South Pole labeled Polus Antarcticus and Australia Inaccessa. A large title cartouche, compass rose and a tiny ship decorate the map. This is the scarce first edition by Visscher, not the Covens & Mortier issue.
