This is the first edition, second issue, of Mitchell’s famous school atlas with "revised edition" on the front cover. It includes 10 single-page and 4 double-page maps along with tables and statistics. All of the maps are dated 1839 with the exception of Great Britain and Germany, which are dated 1840. The Republic of Texas is depicted in its large configuration and can be seen on both the United States and North America maps. The double-page map of the United States also features the large Oregon Territory filling the Northwest, Mexico in control of the Southwest, and a large area in Texas labeled "Herds of Buffaloes and Wild Horses." The Map of the Chief Part of the Western States includes an early depiction of Iowa Territory. Hardbound with pictorial paper over boards.

The maps are good with light toning, soiling, and minor foxing. The U.S. map is loose. Covers are moderately darkened and stained, and the spine ends are worn and chipped.
