This attractive bird's-eye view of Chicago was published just prior to the 1933 World's Fair, which was held along the lakefront of Chicago from June through November 1933, and May through October 1934. The fair was called "A Century of Progress" and the fair buildings are highlighted at the bottom of the map and identified in a key below. Important streets and buildings are highlighted on the map and a large compass rose orients north to the right. Along the left border are vignettes of key locations in the city, such as the Southside Steel Mills, the Union Stock Yard, the University of Chicago, and the Northern Trust Company on LaSalle Street. Along the right border are images of important events in Chicago's history, beginning with Father Marquette, who was the first European to winter in Chicago in 1674, to the Chicago fire in 1871, and ending with a view of LaSalle Street in 1915.

This map was created by Ralph Fletcher Seymour and published by the Northern Trust Company, a financial services company that was founded in Chicago in 1889. Ralph Fletcher Seymour (1876-1966), a native of Illinois and long-time resident of Chicago, was an artist, author and publisher who was best known for illustrating limited-edition books and designing bookplates.
