One page document with title page dated October 7, 1814. It contains the committee's proposed resolution that Congress authorize a contract for the purchase of Jefferson’s library. Jefferson’s offer followed the destruction of the small Congressional library when the British burned the Capitol in August, 1814. The purchase of Jefferson’s library of over 6,000 volumes was completed the next year. The Jefferson library became the foundation of the Library of Congress, now the national library of the U.S. and the world’s largest library. No printed versions found on OCLC, and only one dealer listing in the last 30 years. Printed by Roger C. Weightman in Washington City.
